CNSP Actual Questions Answers Pass With Real CNSP Exam Dumps [Q30-Q50]

In Unix-based systems, memory is divided into two primary regions: kernel space and user space, each serving distinct purposes for process execution and system stability.
Why B is correct: Daemon processes are background services (e.g., sshd, cron) that run with elevated privileges but operate in user space. User space is the memory area allocated for user applications and processes, isolated from kernel space to prevent direct hardware access or system crashes. CNSP highlights that daemons run in user space to maintain system integrity, interacting with the kernel via system calls.
Why other option is incorrect:
A . Kernel space: Kernel space is reserved for the operating system kernel and device drivers, which have unrestricted access to hardware. Running daemons in kernel space would pose significant security and stability risks, and it is not the standard practice in Unix systems.

The Management Information Base (MIB) is a structured database defining manageable objects (e.g., CPU usage, interface status) in a network device. It’s part of the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) framework, per RFC 1157, used for monitoring and managing network devices (e.g., routers, switches).
SNMP Mechanics:
MIB Structure: Hierarchical, with Object Identifiers (OIDs) like 1.3.6.1.2.1.1.1.0 (sysDescr).
Ports: UDP 161 (agent), 162 (traps).
Operation: Agents expose MIB data; managers (e.g., Nagios) query it via GET/SET commands.
MIB files (e.g., IF-MIB, HOST-RESOURCES-MIB) are vendor-specific or standardized, parsed by SNMP tools (e.g., snmpwalk). CNSP likely covers SNMP for network monitoring and securing it against enumeration (e.g., weak community strings like “public”).
Why other options are incorrect:
A . SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol): Email delivery (TCP 25), unrelated to MIB or device management.
C . NTP (Network Time Protocol): Time synchronization (UDP 123), not MIB-related.
D . TACACS (Terminal Access Controller Access-Control System): Authentication/authorization (TCP 49), not MIB management.
Real-World Context: SNMP misconfiguration led to the 2018 Cisco switch exploits via exposed MIB data.

A DNS zone transfer involves replicating the DNS zone data (e.g., all records for a domain) from a primary to a secondary DNS server, requiring a reliable transport mechanism.
Why A is correct: DNS zone transfers use TCP port 53 because TCP ensures reliable, ordered delivery of data, which is critical for transferring large zone files. CNSP notes that TCP is the standard protocol for zone transfers (e.g., AXFR requests), as specified in RFC 5936.
Why other options are incorrect:
B . 53/UDP: UDP port 53 is used for standard DNS queries and responses due to its speed and lower overhead, but it is not suitable for zone transfers, which require reliability over speed.
C . Both 1 and 2: This is incorrect because zone transfers are exclusively TCP-based, not UDP-based.
D . None of the above: Incorrect, as 53/TCP is the correct port for DNS zone transfers.

In Linux, the SGID (Set Group ID) bit alters execution or directory behavior:
On executables: Runs with the group owner’s permissions (e.g., s in group execute position).
On directories: New files inherit the directory’s group ownership.
Notation: s in group execute field (e.g., -rwxr-sr-x), or S if no execute (e.g., -rwxr-Sr-x).
Analysis:
-rwxr-sr-x (myfile): User: rwx, Group: r-s (SGID), Others: r-x. The s in group execute confirms SGID.
-rwsr-xr-x (myprogram): User: rws (SUID), Group: r-x, Others: r-x. The s is in user execute, not group-no SGID.
-rw-r–r-s (anotherfile): User: rw-, Group: r–, Others: r-s. The s is in others execute, but no x exists, rendering it meaningless (not SGID; could be a typo or sticky bit misapplied).
Security Implications: SGID executables (e.g., /usr/bin/wall) or directories (e.g., /var/local) manage group access. Misuse risks privilege escalation. CNSP likely teaches auditing with find / -perm -g=s.
Why other options are incorrect:
B: SUID, not SGID.
C: No valid SGID; s in others is irrelevant without execute.
D: Only A has SGID.
Real-World Context: SGID on /var/mail ensures mail files inherit the mail group.

WannaCry is a ransomware attack that erupted in May 2017, infecting over 200,000 systems across 150 countries. It exploited the EternalBlue vulnerability (MS17-010) in Microsoft Windows SMBv1, targeting unpatched systems (e.g., Windows XP, Server 2003). Developed by the NSA and leaked by the Shadow Brokers, EternalBlue allowed remote code execution.
Ransomware Mechanics:
Encryption: WannaCry used RSA-2048 and AES-128 to encrypt files, appending extensions like .wcry.
Ransom Demand: Displayed a message demanding $300-$600 in Bitcoin, leveraging a hardcoded wallet.
Worm Propagation: Self-replicated via SMB, scanning internal and external networks, unlike typical ransomware requiring user interaction (e.g., phishing).
Malware Context: While WannaCry is malware (malicious software), “ransomware” is the precise subcategory, distinguishing it from viruses, trojans, or spyware. Malware is a broad term encompassing any harmful code; ransomware specifically encrypts data for extortion. CNSP likely classifies WannaCry as ransomware to focus on its payload and mitigation (e.g., patching, backups).
Why other options are incorrect:
B . Malware: Correct but overly generic. WannaCry’s defining trait is ransomware behavior, not just maliciousness. Specificity matters in security taxonomy for threat response (e.g., NIST IR 8019).
Real-World Context: WannaCry crippled NHS hospitals, highlighting patch management’s criticality. A kill switch (a domain sinkhole) halted it, but variants persist.

ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol), per RFC 792, handles diagnostics (e.g., ping) and errors in IP networks. It’s exploitable in:
A . Ping of Death:
Method: Sends oversized ICMP Echo Request packets (>65,535 bytes) via fragmentation. Reassembly overflows buffers, crashing older systems (e.g., Windows 95).
Fix: Modern OSes cap packet size (e.g., ping -s 65500).
B . Smurf Attack:
Method: Spoofs ICMP Echo Requests to a network’s broadcast address (e.g., 192.168.255.255). All hosts reply, flooding the victim.
Amplification: 100 hosts = 100x traffic.
C . ICMP Flooding:
Method: Overwhelms a target with ICMP Echo Requests (e.g., ping -f), consuming bandwidth/CPU.
Variant: BlackNurse attack targets firewalls.
Technical Details:
ICMP Type 8 (Echo Request), Type 0 (Echo Reply) are key.
Mitigation: Rate-limit ICMP, disable broadcasts (e.g., no ip directed-broadcast).
Security Implications: ICMP attacks are DoS vectors. CNSP likely teaches filtering (e.g., iptables -p icmp -j DROP) balanced with diagnostics need.
Why other options are incorrect:
A, B, C individually: All are ICMP-based; D is comprehensive.
Real-World Context: Smurf attacks peaked in the 1990s; modern routers block them by default.

A Silver Ticket is a forged Kerberos Service Ticket (TGS – Ticket Granting Service) in Active Directory, granting access to a specific service (e.g., MSSQL, CIFS) without KDC interaction. Unlike a Golden Ticket (TGT forgery), it requires:
Service Account’s NTLM Hash: The target service’s account (e.g., MSSQLSvc) hash, not a ticket.
Forgery: Tools like Mimikatz craft the TGS (e.g., kerberos::golden /service:<spn> /user:<user> /ntlm:<hash>).
Kerberos Flow (RFC 4120):
TGT (Ticket-Granting Ticket): Obtained via AS (Authentication Service) with user creds.
TGS: Requested from TGS (Ticket Granting Service) using TGT for service access.
Silver Ticket Process:
No TGT needed; the attacker mimics the TGS step using the service account’s stolen hash (e.g., from a compromised host).
C . Service Account Ticket: Misnomer-it’s the hash of the service account (e.g., MSSQLSvc) that enables forgery, not a pre-existing ticket. CNSP’s phrasing likely tests this nuance.
Security Implications: Silver Tickets are stealthier than Golden Tickets (service-specific, shorter-lived). CNSP likely stresses hash protection (e.g., LAPS) and Kerberos monitoring.
Why other options are incorrect:
A . Session Ticket: Not a Kerberos term; confuses session keys.
B . TGT: Used for Golden Tickets, not Silver.
D: Incorrect; the service account’s hash (implied by “ticket”) is essential.
Real-World Context: Silver Tickets exploited in APT29 attacks (2020 SolarWinds) for lateral movement.

TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and UDP (User Datagram Protocol) port numbers are defined by a 16-bit field in their packet headers, as specified in RFC 793 (TCP) and RFC 768 (UDP). A 16-bit integer ranges from 0 to 65,535, yielding a total of 65,536 possible ports (2^16). However, port 0 is universally reserved across both protocols and is not considered “usable” for standard network communication. According to the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), port 0 is designated for special purposes, such as indicating an invalid or dynamic port assignment in some systems (e.g., when a client requests an ephemeral port). In practice, operating systems and applications avoid binding to port 0 for listening services, and it’s often used in error conditions or as a placeholder in protocol implementations (e.g., socket programming).
Thus, the usable port range spans from 1 to 65,535, totaling 65,535 ports. These ports are categorized by IANA into:
Well-Known Ports (0-1023): Reserved for system services (e.g., HTTP on 80/TCP). Note that 0 is still reserved within this range.
Registered Ports (1024-49151): Assigned to user applications.
Dynamic/Ephemeral Ports (49152-65535): Used temporarily by clients.
From a security perspective, understanding the usable port count is critical for firewall configuration, port scanning (e.g., with Nmap), and detecting anomalies (e.g., services binding to unexpected ports). Misconfiguring a system to use port 0 could lead to protocol errors or expose vulnerabilities, though it’s rare. The CNSP curriculum likely emphasizes this distinction to ensure practitioners can accurately scope network security assessments.
Why other options are incorrect:
A . 65536: This reflects the total number of possible ports (0-65535), but it includes the reserved port 0, which isn’t usable for typical TCP/UDP communication. In security contexts, including port 0 in a count could lead to misconfigured rules or scanning errors.
C . 63535: This is an arbitrary number with no basis in the 16-bit port structure. It might stem from a typo or misunderstanding (e.g., subtracting 2000 from 65535 incorrectly), but it’s invalid.
D . 65335: Similarly, this lacks grounding in protocol standards. It could be a miscalculation (e.g., subtracting 200 from 65535), but it doesn’t align with TCP/UDP specifications.
Real-World Context: In penetration testing, tools like Nmap scan ports 1-65535 by default, excluding 0 unless explicitly specified (e.g., -p0-65535), reinforcing that 65,535 is the practical usable count.

TCP uses a structured handshake, and its response to a connection attempt on a closed port follows a specific protocol when unobstructed by a firewall.
Why C is correct: A closed TCP port responds with a RST (Reset) and ACK (Acknowledgment) packet to terminate the connection attempt immediately. CNSP highlights this as a key scanning indicator.
Why other options are incorrect:
A: ICMP Port Unreachable is for UDP, not TCP.
B: FIN/ACK is for closing active connections, not rejecting new ones.
D: SYN/ACK indicates an open port during the TCP handshake.

In Linux, file visibility is determined by naming conventions, impacting how files are listed or accessed in the file system.
Why D is correct: “Dotfiles” are files or directories with names starting with a dot (e.g., .bashrc), making them hidden by default in directory listings (e.g., ls requires -a to show them). They are commonly used for user configuration, as per CNSP’s Linux security overview.
Why other options are incorrect:
A: Library files (e.g., in /lib) aren’t inherently hidden.
B: Driver files (e.g., kernel modules in /lib/modules) aren’t dotfiles by convention.
C: System files may or may not be hidden; “dotfiles” specifically denotes hidden status.

The EICAR test file is a standardized tool in security testing, designed for a specific purpose.
Why A is correct: The EICAR file (a 68-byte string) triggers antivirus detection without harm, testing response capabilities. CNSP recommends it for AV validation.
Why B is incorrect: It has no role in testing encryption; it’s solely for AV functionality.

EternalBlue (MS17-010) is an exploit targeting a buffer overflow in Microsoft’s SMB (Server Message Block) implementation, leaked by the Shadow Brokers in 2017. SMB enables file/printer sharing:
SMBv1 (1980s): Legacy, used in Windows NT/XP.
SMBv2 (2006, Vista): Enhanced performance/security.
SMBv3 (2012, Windows 8): Adds encryption, multichannel.
Vulnerability:
EternalBlue exploits a flaw in SMBv1’s SRVNET driver (srv.sys), allowing remote code execution via crafted packets. Microsoft patched it in March 2017 (MS17-010).
Affected OS: Windows XP to Server 2016 (pre-patch), if SMBv1 enabled.
Proof: WannaCry/NotPetya used it, targeting port 445/TCP.
SMBv1 Only: The bug resides in SMBv1’s packet handling (e.g., TRANS2 requests). SMBv2/v3 rewrote this code, immune to the specific overflow.
Microsoft: Post-patch, SMBv1 is disabled by default (Windows 10 1709+).
Security Implications: CNSP likely stresses disabling SMBv1 (e.g., via Group Policy) and patching, as EternalBlue remains a threat in legacy environments.
Why other options are incorrect:
B, C: SMBv2/v3 aren’t vulnerable; the flaw is SMBv1-specific.
D: SMBv2 isn’t affected, only SMBv1.
Real-World Context: WannaCry’s 2017 rampage hit unpatched SMBv1 systems (e.g., NHS), costing billions.

The screenshot is from Wireshark, a network protocol analyzer, displaying captured network traffic. The relevant columns include the source and destination IP addresses, ports, protocol, and additional information about the packets. Let’s break down the details:
Destination Port Analysis: The screenshot shows multiple packets with a destination port of 443 (e.g., in the “Destination” column, entries like “172.72.61.9:443”). Port 443 is the default port for HTTPS (HTTP Secure), which is HTTP traffic encrypted using SSL/TLS. This indicates that the application is communicating over HTTPS.
Protocol Analysis: The “Protocol” column lists “TLSv1.2” for most packets (e.g., frame numbers 2000084, 2000086). TLS (Transport Layer Security) is the cryptographic protocol used by HTTPS to secure HTTP communications. This confirms that the traffic is HTTPS, not plain HTTP.
Packet Details: The “Info” column provides additional context, such as “Application Data” for TLS packets, indicating encrypted application-layer data (typical of HTTPS). There are also HTTP packets (e.g., frame 2000088), but these are likely part of the HTTPS session (e.g., HTTP/2 over TLS, as noted by “HTTP2”).
Now, let’s evaluate the options:
Option A: “The application is running on port 443 and the HTTPS protocol.” This is correct. The destination port 443 and the use of TLSv1.2 confirm that the application is using HTTPS. HTTPS is the standard protocol for secure web communication, and port 443 is its designated port. CNSP documentation emphasizes that HTTPS traffic on port 443 indicates a secure application-layer protocol, often used for web applications handling sensitive data.
Option B: “The credentials have been submitted over the HTTP protocol.” This is incorrect. HTTP typically uses port 80, but the screenshot shows traffic on port 443 with TLS, indicating HTTPS. Credentials submitted over this connection would be encrypted via HTTPS, not sent in plaintext over HTTP. CNSP highlights the security risks of HTTP for credential submission due to lack of encryption, which isn’t the case here.
Option C: “The credentials have been submitted over the HTTPS protocol.” While this statement could be true (since HTTPS is in use, any credentials would likely be submitted securely), the question asks for the “correct” statement based on the screenshot. The screenshot doesn’t explicitly show credential submission (e.g., a POST request with form data); it only shows the protocol and port. Option A is more directly supported by the screenshot as it focuses on the application’s protocol and port, not the specific action of credential submission. CNSP notes that HTTPS ensures confidentiality, but this option requires more specific evidence of credentials.
Option D: “The application is running on port 80 and the HTTP protocol.” This is incorrect. Port 80 is the default for HTTP, but the screenshot clearly shows port 443 and TLS, indicating HTTPS. CNSP documentation contrasts HTTP (port 80, unencrypted) with HTTPS (port 443, encrypted), making this option invalid.
Conclusion: Option A is the most accurate and comprehensive statement directly supported by the screenshot, confirming the application’s use of port 443 and HTTPS. While Option C might be true in a broader context, it’s less definitive without explicit evidence of credential submission in the captured packets.

The Active Directory (AD) database on Windows domain controllers contains critical directory information, stored in a specific file format.
Why D is correct: The NTDS.DIT file (NT Directory Services Directory Information Tree) is the Active Directory database file, located in C:\Windows\NTDS\ on domain controllers. It stores all AD objects (users, groups, computers) and schema data in a hierarchical structure. CNSP identifies NTDS.DIT as the key file for AD data extraction in security audits.
Why other options are incorrect:
A . NTDS.DAT: Not a valid AD database file; may be a confusion with other system files.
B . NTDS.MDB: Refers to an older Microsoft Access database format, not used for AD.
C . MSAD.MDB: Not a recognized file for AD; likely a misnomer.

In Linux/Unix, file permissions are displayed in a 10-character string (e.g., -rwxr-xr-x), where the first character is the file type (- for regular files) and the next nine are permissions for user (owner), group, and others (rwx = read, write, execute). Special bits like SUID (Set User ID) modify execution behavior:
SUID: When set, a program runs with the owner’s permissions (e.g., root) rather than the executor’s. It’s denoted by an s in the user execute position (replacing x if executable, or capitalized S if not).
Analysis:
-rwxr-sr-x (myfile): User: rwx, Group: r-s (SGID), Others: r-x. The s is in the group execute position, indicating SGID, not SUID.
-rwsr-xr-x (myprogram): User: rws (SUID), Group: r-x, Others: r-x. The s in the user execute position confirms SUID; owned by root, it runs as root.
-rw-r–r-s (anotherfile): User: rw-, Group: r–, Others: r-s. The s is in the others execute position, but no x exists, making it irrelevant (and not SUID). Typically, s here would be a sticky bit on directories, not files.
Security Implications: SUID binaries (e.g., /usr/bin/passwd) are common targets for privilege escalation if misconfigured (e.g., writable by non-root users). CNSP likely emphasizes auditing SUID permissions with find / -perm -u=s.
Why other options are incorrect:
A . myfile: Has SGID (s in group), not SUID.
C . anotherfile: The s doesn’t indicate SUID; it’s a misapplied bit without execute permission.
D . All of the above: Only myprogram has SUID.
Real-World Context: Exploiting SUID binaries is a classic Linux attack vector (e.g., CVE-2016-1247 for Nginx).

Adding a user to a domain group like “Domain Admins” requires the correct command and scope (domain vs. local).
Why A is correct: net group “Domain Admins” John /add /domain adds user John to the domain-level “Domain Admins” group, per CNSP’s domain privilege management.
Why other options are incorrect:
B: net user creates users, not group memberships; syntax is wrong.
C: /admin is invalid; correct group specification is missing.
D: Targets local “Administrator” group, not domain “Domain Admins”.

SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) uses community strings as a basic form of authentication. The default read-only community string “public” is widely known, and if left unchanged, it exposes devices to unauthorized access. The primary risk with “public” is information disclosure, as it typically grants read-only access, allowing attackers to gather sensitive data (e.g., device configurations, network topology) without altering settings.
Why A is correct: With the “public” string, an attacker can use tools like snmpwalk to enumerate device details (e.g., system uptime, interfaces, or software versions) via SNMP queries. This aligns with CNSP’s focus on reconnaissance risks during security audits, emphasizing the danger of default credentials enabling passive data collection.
Why other options are incorrect:
B: While modifying settings is a risk with SNMP, the default “public” string is typically read-only. Changing configurations requires a read-write community string (e.g., “private”), which isn’t implied here. Thus, snmpset would not work with “public” alone.
C: Since B is incorrect in this context, C (both A and B) cannot be the answer.
D: The risk in A is valid, so “none of the above” is incorrect.

Address spoofing fakes a source address (e.g., IP, MAC) to impersonate or amplify attacks. Analyzing protocol resilience:
C . TCP (Transmission Control Protocol):
Mechanism: Three-way handshake (SYN, SYN-ACK, ACK) verifies both endpoints.
Client SYN (Seq=X), Server SYN-ACK (Seq=Y, Ack=X+1), Client ACK (Ack=Y+1).
Spoofing Resistance: Spoofer must predict the server’s sequence number (randomized in modern stacks) and receive SYN-ACK, impractical without session hijacking or MITM.
Correct Implementation: RFC 793-compliant, with anti-spoofing (e.g., Linux tcp_syncookies).
A . UDP:
Connectionless (RFC 768), no handshake. Spoofed packets (e.g., source IP 1.2.3.4) are accepted if port is open, enabling reflection attacks (e.g., DNS amplification).
B . ARP (Address Resolution Protocol):
No authentication (RFC 826). Spoofed ARP replies (e.g., fake MAC for gateway IP) poison caches, enabling MITM (e.g., arpspoof).
D . IP:
No inherent validation at Layer 3 (RFC 791). Spoofed source IPs pass unless filtered (e.g., ingress filtering, RFC 2827).
Security Implications: TCP’s handshake makes spoofing harder, though not impossible (e.g., blind spoofing with sequence prediction, mitigated since BSD 4.4). CNSP likely contrasts this with UDP/IP’s vulnerabilities in DDoS contexts.
Why other options are incorrect:
A, B, D: Lack handshake or authentication, inherently spoofable.
Real-World Context: TCP spoofing was viable pre-1990s (e.g., Mitnick attack); modern randomization thwarts it.

Network segmentation isolates network zones for security, but certain techniques can circumvent these controls, a focus of CNSP penetration testing.
Why D is correct:
A: DNS tunneling encodes data in DNS queries, bypassing segmentation via legitimate DNS traffic.
B: VLAN hopping exploits switch misconfigurations (e.g., double tagging) to access other VLANs.
C: Covert channels use hidden communication paths (e.g., timing channels) to evade segmentation.
All are valid techniques per CNSP for testing segmentation controls.
Why other options are incomplete: A, B, or C alone exclude other viable methods, making D the comprehensive answer.

A null session in Windows is an unauthenticated connection to certain administrative shares, historically used for system enumeration. The net use command connects to a share, and the IPC$ (Inter-Process Communication) share is the standard target for null sessions, allowing access without credentials when configured to permit it.
Why C is correct: The command net use \\hostname\ipc$ “” /u:”” specifies the IPC$ share and uses empty strings for the password (first “”) and username (/u:””), establishing a null session. This syntax is correct for older Windows systems (e.g., XP or 2003) where null sessions were more permissive, a topic covered in CNSP for legacy system vulnerabilities.
Why other options are incorrect:
A: Targets the c$ share (not typically used for null sessions) and uses /u:NULL, which is invalid syntax; the username must be an empty string (“”).
B: Targets c$ instead of ipc$, making it incorrect for null session establishment.
D: Uses ipc$ correctly but specifies /u:NULL, which is not the proper way to denote an empty username.

In Linux/Unix, the SUID (Set User ID) bit allows a program to execute with the owner’s permissions, typically root, rather than the caller’s. It’s denoted by an s in the user execute field (e.g., -rwsr-xr-x). Common SUID programs perform privileged tasks requiring temporary elevation.
Analysis:
C . /usr/bin/passwd:
Purpose: Updates user passwords in /etc/shadow (root-owned, 0600 perms).
Permissions: Typically -rwsr-xr-x, owned by root. The SUID bit lets non-root users modify shadow securely.
Command: ls -l /usr/bin/passwd confirms SUID (s in user execute).
A . /bin/ls:
Purpose: Lists directory contents, no privileged access needed.
Permissions: -rwxr-xr-x (no SUID). Runs as the calling user.
B . /usr/bin/curl:
Purpose: Transfers data over HTTP/FTP, no root privileges required by default.
Permissions: -rwxr-xr-x (no SUID).
Technical Details:
SUID Bit: Set via chmod u+s <file> or chmod 4755.
Security: SUID binaries are audited (e.g., find / -perm -u=s) due to escalation risks if writable or poorly coded (e.g., buffer overflows).
Security Implications: CNSP likely highlights SUID as an attack vector (e.g., CVE-1996-0095 exploited passwd flaws). Hardening removes unnecessary SUID bits.
Why other options are incorrect:
A, B: Lack SUID; no privileged operations.
D: Incorrect, as /usr/bin/passwd is a SUID example.
Real-World Context: SUID on /bin/su or /usr/bin/sudo similarly enables privilege escalation, often targeted in exploits.
